stimuli cause ion flow across sensory receptor membranes which in turn cause action potentials.
What do receptor proteins do?
they detect a stimulus and respond my altering ion channel function
What do Anthropods use to attract mates? (chemical signals)
pheromones
What is Chemoreception?
the detection of chemical stimuli
What are olfactory sensors?
Chemoreceptors- neurons embedded in a layer of epithelial cells at the top of the nasal cavity
What are olfactory hairs?
They are where the dendrites end at the surface of the nasal epithelium
Who are Richard Axel and Linda Buck?
They won the 2204 Nobel Prize for their discovers of odorant receptors and the organization of the olfactory system.
What are Mechanoreceptors?
they are sensory receptors that respond to mechanical pressure or distortion of the skin or other tissue.
What is a receptive field?
the region of space in which presence of a stimulus will elicit firing of the sensory neurons.
