What are the two divisions of the skeletal system?
Axial and Appendicular Skeleton
Axial Skeleton
Consists of the bones that lie around the longitudinal axis of the body . 80 bones. Skull, Vetrebal Column, Ribs and Sternum.
Appendicular Skeleton
Consists of the bones of the upper and lower limbs and the girdles that connect the limbs to the axial skeleton.
Long Bones
Greater in length than they are in width
Ex. Femur |
Short Bones
Cube Shaped
Ex. Wrist bones |
Flat Bones
Thin
Ex. Sternum |
Irregular Bones
Complex in shape.
ex Vertebrae |
Sesamoid bones
Bones shaped like sesame seeds. Protects tendons from excessive wear and tear.
Sutural Bones
Small Extra bone plates located within the sutures of cranial bones.
Two Types of Surface Markings
Depressions (and openings) & Processes
Depression / Openings
Allow for the passage of blood vessels and nerves and forms joints
Processes
Projection or outgrowths of bone that form joints. Attachment points for ligaments and tendons
Types of Processes
Condyle (large round articular bony process) , Epicondyle, Spinous Process(slender projection from a vertebrae), Tubercle (small rounded projection), tuberosity (large bony prominence), trochanters (two quite large projections on the femur)
Types of Depression/ Openings
Foramen(opening in bone) , Fossa(shallow depression) , Meatus (tubelike canal)
