Erythron
line of cells from recognizable erythropoietin-responsive stem cell to red cell
reticulocyte
- the last stage before RBC formation
- have no nuclei
anemia
deficiency in red cells, deficiency of Hb, or deficiency of both
Name the hormone that trigger differentiation of stem cells to RBCs
Erythropoetin
Where is EPO synthesized?
kidney
What stimulus provokes the release of EPO?
Produced in response to hypoxia
What are the ABH antigens?
Antigens found on blood cells which differentiate to different blood types
What are the products of ABH genes?
Blood type O - just H antigen
Blood type A - A antigen
Blood type B - B antigen
What's so special about the red cell's shape?
- shaped like biconcave disk
- allows RBCs to squeeze into small spaces such as capillaries
What organ normally removes RBCs from circulation?
Most often by: spleen
Less often by: liver and bone marrow
What age are RBCs removed from circulation?
End of RBC life span - 120 days
Name 3 major metabolic capabilities that red cells LACK
Dunno - let me know if you guys can find this answer
How is G-6-P dh deficiency usually first observed in a patient?
When a patient is given one of the anlimlarials and then develops hemolytic anemia
How does 2,3-BPG affect hemoglobin function?
2.3-BPG decreases the affinity of Hb for oxygen
Describe how membrane band 3 acts as an oxygen sensor to vary the activities of glycolysis and the pentose phosphate pathway
Band 3 acts as O2 sensor - directs antioxidant production when O2 is high and ATP production when O2 is low

How?
When [O2] high --> binding of glycolytic enzymes to band 3 favored, and since binding to band 3 inhibits their activity: glycolysis slows and more glucose metabolized via PPP
When [O2] falls --> increased amounts of deoxyHb bind to band 3: glycolytic enzymes released, inhibition is relieved, metabolism of glucose by glycolysis can occur
Name as many causes of anemia as you can
Deficient Hb synthesis
iron deficiency
erythropoietin lack
aplastic anemias
premature red cell destruction
What is the source of the CO2 produced by red cells?
???

Couldn't find this one either
