Cytosolic glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase
DHAP -> G3P

*Converts NADH+ -> NAD+
Mitochondrial glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase
G3P -> DHAP
Describe the glycerol phosphate shuttle
1. DHAP is converted to G3P, with NADH oxidized to NAD+

2. G3P translocates to mitochondria, is converted back to DHAP, oxiding FAD+ to FADH2 in the process

3. FADH2 is converted back to FAD+, passes 2e- to coenzyme Q in ETC
Describe the malate-aspartate shuttle
1. OAA converted to malate in cytosol, with oxidation of NADH to NAD+

2. Malate travels to mitochondria, converted back to OAA, converting NAD+ to NADH. NADH enters ETC

3. OAA exits mitochondria by combining with glutamate to form aspartate and alpha-ketoglutarate

4. Once in cytosol, aspartate and alpha-ketoglutarate converted back to OAA and glutamate
Describe flow of e- in ETC
1. NADH converted to NAD+, producing 2e-
2. 2e- travel to complex I, 4 H+ pumped
3. Delivered to coenzyme Q in membrane bilayer, carries electrons to complex III
4. Electrons pass through complex III, 2 H+ pumped
5. Electrons passed to cytochrome c
6. Cytochrome c delivers electorns to complex IV, 4H+ pumped
7. Electrons convert O2 to H2O
