What are arteries? |
Blood vessels carrying blood away from the heart |
What are arterioles? |
Branched from the main artery |
What are capillaries? |
Thin walled, allows for exchange of material, contains precapillary sphincter |
What are venuoles? |
Smaller veins that will merge to become the main vein |
What are veins? |
Contain valves, allow blood to flow back to the heart in one direction |
What does the capillary wall consist of? |
Mostly endothelial cells |
What are the three types of capillaries? |
Continuous – do not have fenestra Fenestrated – Have pores Sinusoidal – large diameter with large fenestra |
What are metarterioles? |
Blood flows from arteriole through metarterioles, then through capillary network |
What is the purpose of venules in the capillary network? |
They drain the network |
How is blood flow regulated though the capillary network? |
Smooth muscle in arterioles, metarterioles, precapillary sphincters regulates blood flow |
What is arteriosclerosis? |
General term for degeneration changes in arteries making them less elastic |
What is atherosclerosis? |
Deposits of plaque on walls of artery |
What happens as the diameter of vessels decreases? |
The total cross-section area increases and velocity of blood flow decreases |
