The human brain is responsible for...
overseeing the daily operations of the human body and for interpreting the vast amount of information it receives.
Weighs an average of ...
1.4 kg
Contains approximately
100 billion neurons
Brain is dedicated to running the ....
body;
brain is responsible for maintaining...
homeostasis.
Sensory Receptor:
a neuron that is specialized to detect a Stimulus
Mechanoreceptors-
respond to movement, pressure, and tension
Photoreceptors (rods and cones)-
respond to variations in light
Chemoreceptor-
respond to chemicals
Thermoreceptors-
respond to changes in temperature
Pain receptors-
respond to tissue damage-PAIN!
The Ear
is really TWO sense organs in ONE
ears detect
sound waves
Ear sense
the position of the HEAD, whether it is still, moving in a straight line or rotating
sound is
vibrations in the air around us
EARS can distinguish
both pitch and loudness of sounds
EYE Sense
light
EYES are
Composed of THREE LAYERS
The eyes outer layer consists of ? & ?
the sclera and cornea
The eyes middle layer contains ?,?,?
the CHOROID, CILIARY BODY, and IRIS

The eye's inner layer consists of the
Retina
The nose: sense of Smell is a
CHEMICAL SENSE,
the cells responsible for smell are specialized chemoreceptor called
OLFACTORY RECEPTORS
The tongue: sense of taste is a
chemical sense
neurons
Specialized Cells
Neurons allow Messages to be carried from one cell to another so
that communication among all body parts is smooth and efficient
NEURONS make up the
Nervous System
The Central Nervous System (CNS) consists of
the Brain and the Spinal Cord
(CNS)-The Spinal Cord carries messages from the body to the Brain, where they are
analyzed and interpreted.
(CNS)after the messages are analyzd in the brain Response Messages are then passed
from the Brain through the Spinal Cord and to the rest if the Body.
The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) consists of the neurons NOT included
in the Brain and Spinal Cord.
AFFERENT NEURONS
Carry impulses from the SENSE ORGANS (RECEPTORS) to the Bain and Spinal Cord
EFFERENT NEURONS
Carry impulses from the Brain and Spinal Cord to MUSCLES or GLANDS.
INTERNEURONS-
Connect sensory and motor neurons and carry impulses between them. They are found entirely within the Central Nervous System
DENDRITES-
short branch extensions spreading out from the cell body. Dendrites Receive STIMULUS and carry IMPLUSES from the ENVIRONMENT or from other Neurons and CARRY THEM TOAWRD THE CELL BODY
AXON-
a long fiber that CARRIES IMPULSES AWAY FROM THE CELL BODY
Neurons ONLY have ONE...
Axon
4 functions of nervou system
1. Gathers information both from the outside world and from inside the body. SENSORY FUNCTION
2. Transmits the information to the processing area of the brain and spinal cord
3. Processes the information to determine the best response. INTEGRATIVE FUNCTION
4. Sends information to muscles, glands, and organs (effectors) so they can respond correctly. Muscular contraction or glandular secretions. MOTOR FUNCTION
