Biosphere
consists of all the parts of the planet that are inhabited by living things
Ecosystem
is the community if living things in an area, along with the nonliving features of the environment that support the living community
Organism
an individual living thing
Cell
basic unit of living matter; separated from it's environment by a plasma membrane
DNA
is the chemical responsible for inheritance - the passing on of traits from parents to offspring
Genes
units of inherited information found along the length of each DNA molecule
Species
distinct form of life
Domain
the broadest category in classifying life forms
Unicellular
a type of organism who's body consists entirely of one single cell
Prokaryotic Cells
organisms that lack nuclei - their DNA is not separated from the rest of the cell
Eukaryotic Cells
organisms that contain nuclei that separate DNA from the rest of the cell
Multicellular
organisms that consist of many cells, not just one
System
a complex organization formed from a simpler combination of parts
Photosynthesis
process by which plants use the sun's energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars
Producers
plants and other photosynthetic organisms produce the food upon which the entire ecosystem depends
Consumers
animals and other organisms that eat (consume) a portion of the food made by producers
Homeostasis
internal stability or "steady state" maintained by the body
Adaption
an inherited trait that helps the organism's ability to survive and reproduce in its particular environment
Population
a localized group of organisms belonging to the same species
Natural Selection
process by which individuals with inherited characteristics well-suited to the environment leave more offspring than other individuals
Evolution
a generation-to-generation change in the proportion of different inherited genes in a population
