What is the importance of a balanced diet?

1. Source of energy

2. Ensure continous metabolic reactions

3. Chemical building blocks

What is metabolism?

The sum of all chemical reactions in the body

What is basal metabolic rate? (BMR)

Energy consumed while carrying out basic activites like breathing and excretion

What is the daily energy requirement for a girl and boy?

Girl- 2000kcal

Boy- 2500-2800kcal

Why does children need more energy compared to adults?

Because they are growing and have higher metabolic rate

Why does a male need more energy than female?

Male have more muscles and have higher metabolic rate then females

Why does a pregnant women need more energy?

To support their growing foetuses

Why does breast feeding ( lactation ) need more energy?

To produce milk for babies

Why does smaller size people need more energy?

Because smaller size ppl have a larger total surface area compared to huge ppl. Thus they lose more heat to the surrounding. Then they need to eat more

What is the factors affecting daily energy requirement?

Age, climate, occupation, size and weight, sex, pregnancy and breast feeding

How to determine energy content of food?

Bomb calorimeter

How to test reducing sugar? And observation?

Benedict's solution. Brick red precipitate is formed

How to test non reducing sugar and observation?

Dilute HCL and benedict solution. Brick red precipitate is formed

How to test protein and observation?

Biuret test (20% NaOH + 1% CuSO4). Solution turns purple

How to test lipid?

1. Filter paper. Translucent mark

2. Emulsion test. Cloudy emulsion formed

How to test vitamin c and observation?

DCPIP. Presence of ascorbic acid will decolourise blue dcpip solution

How to determine whether food x is a non reducing sugar?

1. X is added with 5 drops of diulte HCL into boiling tube

2. Mixture is heated for 5 min and left to cool and sodium bicarbonate is added to neutralise acid

3. Benedicts solution is added and the mixture is heated in water bath

4. Brick red precipitate is formed

What is digestion?

A process to break down complex food substances into simple and soluble molecules to allow absorption of body cells

What is physical digestion and the purpose?

Changes big piecies into small pieces by chewing or churning to increase TSA for enzyme reaction
