Plasma

Yellow Like substance that contains fibrinogen, albumin, and globulin. Is the fluid part of the blood.

Thrombus

A blood clot that blocks the blood vessel

Embolus

A blood clot that dislodges and is carried to another part of the body via the circulatory system.

Erythrocyte

A Red Blood Cell that contains Hemoglobin and carries O2.

Anemia

When cells don't get enough oxygen due to low oxygen levels or poor RBC production.

Antigen

A protein like substance that triggers the production of an antibody.

Leukocyte

A white blood cell. Creates antigens and antibodies.

Antibody

A protein that kills foreign invaders in the body. Is formed within the blood and acts with an antigen.

Platelet

A cell that is essential for clotting.

Aggulutination

An excessive amount of blood clotting and clumping.

Phagocytosis

Foreign invader gets a protective coating.

Coating gets punctured and cell swells till it bursts.

Macrophage comes and engulfs proteins and cell reminants.

When a WBC engulfs and chemically destroys a microbe.

T Cell

A Lymphocyte. Produced in the bone marrow. Matures in the Thymus Gland. Identifies and Attacks foreign substances.

B Cell.

A Lymphocyte.

Produced and matured in the bone marrow. Creates antibodies.

Macrophage.

"Big Eater" Eats foriegn invaders through Phagocytosis. Found in the lymph nodes, bone marrow, spleen, and liver.

Pus

Contains protein fragments from digested leukocytes and microbes. In the Second line of defense. Is a sure sign that the immune system is fighting off a foreign invader. Inflammation also occurs.

Receptor Sites.

Sites where the hormones, nutrients, and other materials fit.

Inflammatory Response

Sign that immune system is working. Usually pus accompanies this. Triggered when tissue cells are injured by bacteria or physical injury. Swelling, heat, redness, and pain accompany it.

Helper T cell.

A T-Cell with receptors that bind to fragments of antigens.

Complement Protein.

Plasma protein that helps defend against invading microbes by tagging the microbe for phagocytosis, puncturing cell membranes, or forming a mucous coating.

Lymphokine.

A protein produced by a T Cell that acts as a messenger among B and T cells.

Killer T Cell.

A T Cell that punctures the cell membrane.

Memory B Cell

Holds information about the shape of an antigen.

Surpressor T Cell.

Turns the immune system "off"
