What is Colchisine used for?
Inhibits tubulin (microtubule) polymerization
What is BDM used for?
myosin inhibitor, but also general ATPase inhibitor.
What is cytochalasin B used for?
Prevents actin polymerization.
Blocks formation of microfilaments.
What is Phalloidin used for?
Visualizes actin filaments (when fluorescently labelled).

Also prevents actin filaments from breaking down.
What is Northern blot used for?
Used to detect targetted RNA sequences; Can give limited quantitative information.
What is Southern blot used for?
Used to detect particular DNA sequences.
What is Western blot used for?
For detecting proteins.
What is tritiated-water release assay used for?
For measuring enzyme activity.
What is relative luciferase activity used for?
Measures how much protein a particular gene is making.
What is ChIP used for?
Use to detect what part of DNA a protein is binding to.

(ChIP was used to confirm SF-1 was an aromatase transcription factor.)
What is ferlin?
A membrane protein, expressed in testes and ovaries, that causes infertility when mutated in male Drosophilia.
What is RT-PCR used for?
To quantify the amount of RNA transcripts.

( Technically RT-PCR quantifies DNA, but mRNA transcripts are usually converted to cDNA first and then tested. )
What is the MTT assay?
Measures the number of viable cells.

This assay can tell you if your culture is growing or dying over time.
