Competing Intraspecifically
Members of the same species compete for limited resources
Fundamental Niche
The full range of environmental conditions and resources an organism can possibly occupy and use (when limiting factors are absent)
Realized Niche
The part of the fundamental niche that organisms occupy as a result of limiting factors present
Resource Partitioning
When resources are limited, species evolve to share the specific resource
Commensalism
When one party benefits from the relationship and the other is unaffected
Obligate Mutualism
A type of mutualism in which the species involved are in close proximity and interdependent with one another in a way that one cannot survive without the other
Obligate Parasitism
A parasitic organism that cannot compete it's life cycle without exploiting a suitable host. If the parasite cannot obtain a host it fails to reproduce
Facultative Mutualism
The interacting species derives a benefit from each other but are not fully dependent to the point where they cannot survive without each other
Facultative Commensalism
They can but do not have to live without one another
Cryptic Coloration
Conceals an animals shape
Aposematic Coloration
Markings that warn off predators
Batesian Mimicry
A harmless species that has evolved to imitate the warning markings of a harmful species
Eutrophication
Addition of artificial or natural substances through detergents, fertilizers, or sewage
Mutualism
A symbiotic relationship where both parties benefit
Proxy Indicators
Preserved physical characteristics of the past that stand for direct measurements
Keystone species
Animals that have a disproportionately large affect on on their environment relative to their abundance
Foundation Species
Plays a strong role in the community and it's structure
Dominant Species
The species that is most dominant in a community
