Notochord
A rod of supporting tissue located near the dorsal side of the organism. Is usually composed of some kind of connective tissue like protein strands, cartilage, or bone.
Nerve cord
composed of a collection of nerve fibers that run down the length of the organism on the dorsal side. A hollow tube filled with a fluid that serves to maintain its shape.
Pharyngeal pouches
Located in the neck region of the organism. Consists of folds of tissue that in fishes and amphibians become the gills in the adult stage. In other organisms, like reptiles and mammals, they are only present during the embryonic stages.
Post-anal tail
An extension of the notochord past the anus. Contains the connective tissue of the notochord, often composed of muscle and nerve tissue, and covered by an epithelium (skin). Used as an aid in locomotion. In humans the post-anal tail is only present during a specific embryonic stage. Is not present in the adult stage.
