Fatty acids

building blocks for most complex lipids. Act as fuel for the body. Long chains of carbons with a carboxylic acid at one end. Fatty acids have the most energy per unit weight.

Amphipathic

Has polar and nonpolar end. Like a phospholipid.

Sphingolipid

they have a long chain fatty acid and a polar phosphate head group. but instead of a glycerol backbone, they have an amino alcohol called a sphingosine. PART OF CELL MEMBRANE

waxes

lipid made of an ester linkage between a long chain alcohol and a long chain fatty acid. Water repellent

prostaglandins

type of eicosanoid. Asprin inhibits prostaglandins. Thromboxane is a prostaglandin that acts as a vasoconstrictor.

directionality

DNA is written 5 to 3.

Nonpolar amino acids

Gavli Mpfw

Glycine, alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, methionine, proline, phenylalanine, tryptophan.

Acidic amino acids

Aspartic acid, glutamic acid. Both have COOH and amino goup.

Basic amino acids.

Histadine, lysine, arginine.

they have amine groups and no oxygen in side chain.

Secondary structure

alpha helices and beta pleated sheets. Hydrogen bonding is the major interaction.

tertiary structure

3d shape of protein. curls and fold in chain.
