Maritime

Air masses that form over oceans.

Polar

Form near the poles , form north of 50° north latitude and south of 50° south latitude

Tropical

Warm air masses form in the tropics/equator and have low air pressure.

Air mass

A huge body of air.

Continental

Air masses that form over land, these air masses are drier than maritime air masses.

Jet streams

Bands of high speed winds about 10 kilometers above Earth's surface.

Front

The boundary where air masses meet.

Occluded

When warm air mass is cut off from the ground.

Cyclone

The swirling center of low air pressure.

Anticyclone

High pressure centers of dry air.

Atmosphere

The envelope of gases that forms earth's most outer layer, mostly nitrogen and oxygen.

Geosphere

It's made up of all of Earth's rocks and dirt.

Hydrosphere

It contains Earth's waters such as rivers ,oceans, lakes, groundwater, and water vapor.

Cryosphere

It's all of Earth's water in the form of ice on or in earth such as glaciers, snow fields, ice caps, ice sheets, sea ice, and frozen ground.

Biosphere

It's the part of earth that contains living organisms such as animals, humans, and plants.

Tropical zone

The area near the equator between about 23.5° north latitude and 23.5° south latitude.

Polar zone

The area near both poles from about 66 .5° to 90° north and 66 .5° degrees to 90° south latitudes.

Windward

The side of the mountain range that faces the oncoming wind.

Leeward

The side of the mountain range that faces away from the oncoming wind.

Monsoon

Sea or land breeze over a large region that change direction .

Density

The amount of mass in a given volume.

Air pressure

The force pushing on an area or surface.

Barometer

An instrument that is used to measure air pressure.

Mercury barometer

Consist of a long glass tube that is close at one end and open up the other end. (measures air pressure)

Aneroid barometer

An airtight metal chamber, which is sensitive to changes in air pressure. (measures air pressure)

Altitude

The average level of motion of the distance above sea level.

Weather

The condition of Earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place.

Temperature

It measures the average energy of motion of the particles in a substance.

Thermal energy

It measures the total energy of motion in the particles of a substance.

Thermometer

A device that measures temperature.

Convection

The transfer of heat by the movement of fluid.

Conduction

The transfer of heat between two substances that are in direct contact.

Convection currents

The upward movement of warm air and the downward movement of cool air form this.

Heat

A thermal energy that is transferred from a hotter object to a cooler one.
