The science of interpretation, concerned with the rules of interpretation that have to be followed consistently in order to have a consistent understanding of the Word of God
Interpretation: Exegesis - Definition
The application of the laws (hermeneutics) of interpretation to the Scriptures
Basic Rules of Interpretation - 1
Understand the purpose of the Bible as a whole. (overall purpose is the glory of God)
Basic Rules of Interpretation - 2
Recognize the distinctive character and message of each book. The main point, passage and characteristic is to be recognized
Basic Rules of Interpretation - 3
Determine to whom the Book is addressed (wrong applications and conclusions will be avoided)
Basic Rules of Interpretation - 4
Determine the context, remember 'a text, apart from its context, is a pretext'
Basic Rules of Interpretation - 5
Check related Scriptures on any given subject (example - we don't receive anything just because we ask in Jesus Name, it has to be in accordance with God's will)
Basic Rules of Interpretation - 6
Discover the exact meaning of the key words of the text you are interpreting.
Basic Rules of Interpretation - 7
Avoid personal prejudices, don't interpret the Bible based upon pet ideas and prejudices
Basic Rules of Interpretation - 8
Principles of plain interpretation, called Literal interpretation, always interpret the Bible literally
Golden Rule of Interpretation
When the plain sense of Scripture makes common sense, then seek no other sense. Therefore take every word in its primary, ordinary, usual, literal meaning, unless the facts of the immediate context, studied in the light of related passages and axiomatic and fundamental truths clearly indicate otherwise.
Golden Rule: Ramification 1
We must determine what the meaning of each word in its grammatical, historical sense. What did the word mean back then, not now
Golden Rule: Ramification 2
Literal interpretation does not include the use or recognition of figures of speech
Golden Rule: Ramification 3
Literal interpretation does not interpret apart from context
Golden Rule: Ramification 4
Literal interpretation recognizes progressive revelation (example Old Testament saints didn't look forward to the death of Messiah, no one heard about it until Isaiah in 700 BC)
Golden Rule: Ramification 5
Except the Bible to use phenomenal language
Golden Rule: Ramification 6
Recognize important divisions in the text (the important divisions are Dispensations and Covenants)
