Ambient

__________Light: The natural light in a scene or light in a room without using flash.
Archival
The ability of a material, including ink, print papers and compact discs, to last for many years. A term often used to imply that a material will be stable over time.
Aperture
A small, circular opening inside the lens that can change in diameter to control the amount of light reaching the camera's sensor as a picture is taken.
Aperture Priority
A camera function that permits the photographer to set the aperture and the camera automatically determines the correct shutter speed. (2words).
Autofocus
The ability of a lens to focus automatically on an object within its focusing sensors.
Backlight
The light directed at the subject from behind the subject. This often causes the subject to be underexposed unless spot metering or exposure compensation is used.
Contrast
The difference between the darkest and lightest areas in a photo. The greater the difference, the higher the contrast.
Cropping
Removing parts of an image in order to improve the image’s composition.
Depth of Field
The range of distance in a scene that appears to be in focus and will be reproduced as being acceptably sharp in an image. Depth of field is controlled by the lens aperture, and extends for a distance in front of and behind the point on which the lens is focused (3 words)
Exposure
The amount of light captured by the camera. Digital cameras feature auto exposure, sometimes known as programmed auto exposure, in which the camera reads the amount of light in the scene and then sets the exposure automatically for you.
External Flash
A supplementary flash unit that connects to the camera with a cable or hot shoe, or is triggered by the light from the camera’s internal flash. (2 words)
F-stop
An adjustment which opens or closes the aperture of the lens to let in more or less light. (2 words)
Fill Flash
A flash technique used to brighten deep shadow areas, typically outdoors on sunny days. Some digital cameras include a fill flash mode that forces the flash to fire, even in bright light. (2 words)
Grayscale
A photo made up of varying tones of black and white.
Hot Shoe
A clip on the top of the camera that is used to attach an external flash. (2 words)
Image Editor
A computer program that enables you to adjust a photo to enhance its appearance. (2 words)
Image Resolution
A combination of the camera’s number of pixels and the amount that objects are distinguishable from one another in a photo due to the lens quality and sensitivity of the sensor to light. (2 words)
ISO
A rating of a camera sensor’s sensitivity to light.
JPEG
A standard for compressing image data developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group.
LCD
Liquid Crystal Display: a low-power monitor used on the rear of a digital camera to display settings or the photos themselves or use to compose photos in shooting modes.
Macro Mode
A mode that allows you to get very close to objects so they appear greatly enlarged in the picture. Most compact cameras have a macro setting with an icon of a flower to designate it. (2 words)
Megapixel
Equal to approximately one million pixels.
Pixel
Picture Element: smallest element of a digital photograph.
Redeye
The red glow from a subject’s eyes caused by light from a flash reflecting off the blood vessels behind the retina in the eye.
Sharpness
The clarity of detail in a photo.
Shutter
The device in the camera that opens and closes to let light strike the image sensor and expose the image.
Shutter Speed
How long its shutter remains open as the picture is taken. (2 words)
Thumbnail
A small version of a photo used for reference.
White Balance

Compensates for different types of light that can create a dominant hue of color that needs to be corrected to produce more natural results. (2 words)
