Somatization Disorder
motivation may be conscious or unconsciuos

pain sx (at least 4), indifferent body sites
at least 2 GI sx
at least 1 sexual/reproductive problem other than pain
at least 1 pseudoneurologic sx

Tx: Cognitive behavior therapy, also group therapy
Conversion Disorder
- A sensory or motor sx
- Sx is preceded by a conflict
- Not intentional (unconscious)
- No finding in medical workup

Tx: Psychotherapy (not insight-minded); sx are "stress response"; emphasize "mind-body" connection; hypnosis
Hypochondriasis
- Preoccupation with having a serious disease due to misinterpretation of bodily sensations
- can't be reassured for significant period of time
- Not delusional
Body Dysmorphic Disorder
- Related to OCD
- Preoccupation with an imagined defect in appearance
- Does not include anorexia nervosa

Tx: SSRI, behavioral therapy
Factitious Disorder (aka Munchausen's Dz)
- Sx are intentionally created for purpose of assuming "sick role" and attention/reduction of responsibility that accompanies it
- occurs by proxy (children < 2 y.o.) with complaints of apnea or sz
Malingering
- Feign illness for reasons other than sick role
- Secondary gain, often money is involved

Tx: thorough evaluation; allow pt to give up sx with dignity
