A mature definse mechanism where a person reroutes a trajedy into an acceptable form (i.e. MADD speakers)
Sublimation
An immature defense mechanism where the person attributes one's own unacceptable feelings to others (a man who desires his brother's wife, believes his own wife is cheating)
Projection
An immature defense mechanism where the person believes people or events are either all bad or all good because of intolerance of ambiguity.
Splitting
An immature defense mechanism where the person expresses childlike patterns of behavior during stressful situations.
Regression
An immature defense mechanism where there is separation of function of mental processes (abused child has two personalities).
Dissociation
Refusing to acknowledge problems/unacceptable feelings (sometimes with drug abuse)
Denial
rerouting intense anger to something lesser (losing a job ---> getting mad at the wife)
Displacement
Patterning behavior after someone that is powerful (after a father who abused the patient).
Identification
Not a bad form of defense, where a person uses the mind's higher funtions to distract from uncomfortable emotions.
Intellectualization
Not reacting to stressful events while understanding.
Isolation of Affect (***remember for exam***) See in OCD and OCPD.
Giving a reasonable explanation
Rationalization
Denying unacceptable feelings, adopting opposite attitudes (getting angry with someone you are attracted to).
Reaction Formation
Converting an unacceptable impulse or feeling into a physical symptom
Somatization
Erasing an unacceptable event from the past by adopting acceptable behavior in the present (superstition, OCD washing hands)
