APOE “apolipoprotein E”
E4 version of APOE gene increases individuals risk for developing late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (50%) of cases
P’s (ages 37-80)all carried APOE gene but in one group, p’s also had at least one parent with Alzheimers’s or dementia
Subjects performed worse in memory tests compared to middle-age people who had the same gene but did not have a parent diagnosed with Alzheimer’s
Difference in memory was equivalent to approximately 15 years of extra brain aging 55-70 year
Use it or lose it hypothesize: have to keep mind moving
Receptive field
” The portion of the visual field in which the presentation of visual stimuli will produce an alteration in the firing rate of a particular neuron

What the cell “sees
Receptive field of a ganglion cell
The region in the retina where light influences the response of that ganglion cell
Each receptive field is arranged into:
central disk, the “center“
concentric ring, the "surround“
Each region responding oppositely to light
Why center-surround receptive field organization?
Allows ganglion cells to transmit information not merely about whether photoreceptor cells are exposed to light, but also about the differences in firing rates of cells in the center and surround of the receptive field

This allows them to transmit information about contrast
