Salon

A meeting of philosophers, artists, writers and scientists to discuss ideas. Usually hosted by wealthy Parisian women.

Baroque

A style of art in Europe during the 1600s and early 1700s which is characterised by elaborate, grand, ornate designs.

Neo-classical

Meaning "new classical", a style of art which emerged during the enlightenment. This style borrowed simple and elegant themes from classical Greece and Rome.

Enlightened despots

Absolute rulers in Europe (such as Frederick II of Prussia and Joseph II of Austria) who embraced enlightenment ideas and made a number of reforms.

Catherine the Great

Absolute monarch of Russia. She attempted to implement enlightenment ideas in Russia, such as the abolition of serfdom, torture and capital punishment, and the introduction of religious freedom. None of these goals were achieved, however she did dramatically increase the size of the Russian empire.

Classical music

A new form of lighter, more elegant music. Classical composers included Bach, Handel, Beethoven and Mozart.
