What is a Foreign Body Tattoo?
The intentional or iatrogenic introduction of inert pigment within CT, eg Amalgam, graphite, carbon
What is an alternative diagnosis for a Foreign Body Tattoo that may need to be ruled out?
Melanocytic lesion
What is the scientific name for a common mole?
Acquired Melanocytic Naevus
What are the 3 histological types of Acquired Melanocytic Naevus, and what are they based on?
AMN are grouped depending on where the collection of nevus cells is located microscopically. Ie:

Junctional - first stage. Appear flat and usually dark and uniform in colour

Compound - may evolve from a juctional neavus. Proliferation of naevus cells occurs, with some of the cells "dropping of" into the superficial CT. May begin to show elevation clinically. Hairs often seen

Intradermal/Intramucosal - with time the naevus cells may be completely contained within the dermal CT. Elevated with variable degree of pigmentation. Many are normal skin colour, especially in older adults
Axuired Melanocytic Naevus infrequently develops in the oral cavity. When it does, where is it most likely?
Hard palate, attached gingiva, but can be anywhere
What is the risk of malignant transformation to melanoma for an individual nevus?
1 in a million
What is the treatment for an Aquired Melanocytic Naevus and when should you biopsy?
No treatment necessary.

Excisional biopsy only needed when there are changes to the naevus or chronic irritation.
When a melanocytic naevus is present at birth, what is it called. How often does this occur?
Congenital Melanocytic Naevus - 1% of newborns
What is classified as a large Congenital Melanocytic Naevus as opposed to a small one? What are some other names for large CMN?
Small <15cm

Large also know as:
- "garment" nervus
- "bathing trunk" nervus
What is the risk of a malignant transformation in a Congential Melanocytic Naevus?
1% for small, possibly excise
10-15% for large, thus staged excision
What is the histology of a blue Naevus?
Collection of dendritic melanocytes within the CT
Describe a Blue Naevus...
A bluish or blue-gray neavus that is less than 1cm, usually appears in the fourth decade of life. May effect any cutaneous or mucosal site.
What is the treatment and prognosis for a Blue Naevus?
Simple excision, prognosis is excellent, recurrence is rare.
What is the histology of a Melanotic Macule?
Shows NO naevus cells or clustering of melanocytes.

Often note increased amount of melanin pigment in the basal layer, or melanophages in the superficial CT or both
Tx of a Melanotic Macule?
If on vermilion zone they are often excised for cosmetic purposes.

Tissue should be biopsied to make sure its not an early melanoma.
