Barbituates:

have lots of tolerance...have been replaced by benzos due their physical dependence and severe withdrawal symptoms
interfere with the Na/K transport system of cell membranes.
increase GABA action and increase chloride entry into the neurons
Do not use in pts with acute intermittent porphyria bc increase porphyrin synthesis
ADRs: drowsiness, decreased concentration, physical sluggishness, drug hangover, and has severe withdrawal symptoms
Phenobarbitol:
long acting (1-2days)
used in long term seizure disorder
control of status epilepticus and eclampsia
DOC for children with recurrent febrile seizures
it is rarely used as a hypnotic
Thiopental
only given via IV it is short acting
used for anesthesia
Chloral hydrate:

Non-barbiturate hypnotics:
derivative of acetylaldehyde
indices sleep in 30 min and acts for 6 hrs
has a very unpleasant taste
Meprobamate:

carbamate derivative with tranquilzing muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant activity
