Herman Bavinck (1854-1921)
Herman Bavinck (1854-1921)
Dutch Reformed Theologian and Churchman

Dissertation at Leiden in 1880 on “The Ethics of Zwingli”

Major post was Free University in Amsterdam where he succeeded Dr. Abraham Kuyper as professor in dogmatics.

One of Bavinck’s leading disciples was renowned Reformed Theologian Dr. Louis Berkhof, professor of systematic theology and president of Calvin Theological Seminary from 1926 to 1944.
Method 1
Dogmatics and ethics belong together (1:58). The two fit as a hand and a glove. "Dogmatics describes the deeds of God done for, to, and in human beings; ethics describes what renewed human beings now do on the basis of and in the strength of those divine deeds. I
Revelation
Revelation is found in Scritpure, the church and Christian consciousness.

Christianity claims "that God reveals himself in nature and history and centrally in Christ, a general and a special revelation." (Prologomena)

CHristianity says "that we cannot naturally understand the things of the Spirit of God (1 Cor. 2:14) but must be born again and renewed to understand God's revelation and to submit to the authority of the Word."(Prologomena)
Mod Theo. Q. The relationship of Christianity to the spirit of the theologians’ milieu
Sacred Scripture is the source of theology. The Lord spoken! Without theology the church cannot exist. But without faith theology cannot exist.

For Bavinck, theology was still the queen of the sciences. He fiercely resisted the secularization of theology. Theology is born in the faith of the church and has the knowledge of God as its content. The fear of the Lord is its key element. “Theology is speaking about God, through God and to God.” It is a positive science, the knowledge of God in the face of Christ the Sent One of the Father. Without the knowledge of God, there is no real life. For this task theology is God’s ordained instrument.
The study of theology is sacred work, a priestly service in the house of the Lord, a consecration of heart and mind to the glory of God. The church’s and our personal confession of faith is thoroughly theological
Systems Q. Bavinck on major points of conflict in the church
Sacraments - B. says that "the sacrament works physically and magically" Kreeft says "a sacrament is just the opposite of magic, it is a free gift, and therefore must be freely accepted.

B. says that "faith is no longer a requirement". Kreeft says that "we receive grace from the sacraments in proportion to our individual faith" but also that "the faith of the Church precedes the faith of the individual.

B says that the sacraments are removed from the Word, Catholics say that sacraments are noting without the real presence of Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh.

(Bavinck 653, Kreeft 289)
Systems Q. Bavinck's view of human ability
CHristianity says "that we cannot naturally understand the things of the Spirit of God (1 Cor. 2:14) but must be born again and renewed to understand God's revelation and to submit to the authority of the Word."(Prologomena)

In no domain in life are the intellect, the heart, reason and conscious, feeling and imagination, the epistemic source of truth, but only organs by which we perceive truth and make it our own." (Prologomena)

Every theologian receives religious convictions from a faith community. Isolating oneself (the theologian) from the church is to lose the truth of the CHristian faith. (Prologomena)
Systems Q. Bavinck's view of the doctrine of salvation
1. B. holds to total depravity and complete inability (357ff)

2. 481ff. Pre-covenant of God, everything already done by God, it is only the epistemic knowledge that makes salvation appear temporally located.
Systems Q. Bavinck's view of authority
The Minister of the Word is supreme, since "the teaching power of proclamation must not - as Roman Catholics do - be subordinated to the sacraments since, according to scripture, the Word has precedence over the sacraments" (513)
Sources of Theology (Tradition and Scripture)
"Scripture is the sole foundation of the church and theology. In the case of conflict between them, the church and confession must yield to scripture. Only scripture is self authenticating, and its own interpreter, and nothing may be put on a level with Scripture." (Prolegomena). Also, Nature is viewed in the light of scripture, and Scripture is needed to see Nature rightly.
