Define Solids |
Solids have a definite shape and volume. Particles are packed closely together and vibrate when heated. |
Define Liquids |
Liquids have definite volumes but no definite shape. Particles are not packed too closely together. Particles can move freely among particles. |
Define Gases |
Gases have no fixed shape or volume. Gases can be compressed. Gas particles are far way from one another. They move freely. |
Define Model |
A model is an idea that explains certain behaviour. |
What is "to be objective" |
To be objective means to rely on the evidence collected. |
Define and name an example of viscosity |
Viscosity describes how quickly liquid flows. Water has low viscosity. Honey has high viscosity. |
Describe the Brownian Motion |
1827 Botanist Robert Brown noticed pollen grains floating around moved around in a zig-zag motion.
Einstein suggested microscopic materials were being hit by water particles. Water particles are strong enough to move the pollen grains |
What temperature does Kelvin begin? |
At -273 degrees Celcius, it is 0 Kelvin. |
Define Solution |
A mixture containing a solute dissolved in a solvent. |
Define Solute |
A solid which will dissolve in a solvent. The solid is said to be soluble. |
Define Solvent |
A substance which will dissolve a solute. |
Define Soluble |
A solid which can dissolve in a solvent. |
Define Dissolve |
A substance which can mix evenly into another substance. |
Define Insoluble |
A solid which cannot dissolve in a solvent. |
Define Immiscible |
Two liquids who cannot dissolve in each other. |
Define Miscible |
Two liquids which can mix evenly with each other. |
What does water consist of? |
H2O; 2 parts Hydrogen, 1 part Oxygen. |
How does a solid become a gas? |
A process called sublimation. |
How does a gas become liquid? |
A process called condensation. |
How does a solid become liquid? |
A process called melting. |
How does a liquid become a solid? |
A process called freezing/ solidification. |
How does a liquid become gas? |
A process called evaporation. |
How do you find the density of a solid? |
Density =
MASS (g) ----------- VOLUME (mL) |
What is an example of a colloidal suspension of liquid in gas? |
Liquid aerosol, fog. |
