What Army publication covers Basic Rifle Marksmanship?

TC 3-22.9

Safe weapons handling procedures are a consistent and standardized way for Soldiers to handle, operate, and employ the weapon safely and effectively. What three components is weapons handling built on?

(1) The Soldier must maintain situational understanding of friendly forces, the status of the weapon, and the ability to evaluate the environment to properly handle any weapon.(2) The weapon. The Soldier must know of and how to operate the mechanical safeties built into the weapons they employ, as well as the principles of operation for those weapons.(3) The environment is the Soldier’s surroundings. The Soldier must be aware of muzzle discipline, the nature of the target, and what is behind it.

To safely and effectively handle weapons, Soldiers must be cognitively aware of three distinct weapons handling measures. What are these three measures?

(1) Rules of firearms safety

(2) Weapons safety status

(3) Weapons control status

The Rules of Firearms Safety are standardized for any weapon a Soldier may employ. What are these four rules?

Rule 1: Treat Every Weapon as if it is Loaded

Rule 2: Never Point the Weapon at Anything You Do Not Intend to Destroy

Rule 3: Keep Finger Straight and Off the Trigger Until Ready to Fire

Rule 4: Ensure Positive Identification of the target

Each aiming device functions in a different manner. Name some aiming devices and how they function.

Iron. Iron sights (rear aperture and front sight post) and Back up iron sights (BUIS).- Optics. types: Close Combat Optic (CCO) and Rifle Combat Optic (RCO, Combat Optic Gunsight or ACOG).- Thermal. These are electronic sighting systems that provide a view of the field of view (FOV) based on temperature variations. - Pointer/Illuminator/Laser. These aiming devices use either a laser beam, flood light, or other light to aim the weapon at the target.

What is a MOA?

- minute of angle (MOA)

-One MOA equals 1.047 inches per 100 yards.

They can only identify emitted radiation in the form of heat.

well-aimed shots. What are the two truths (musts) to achieve this end state? (

(1) Properly point the weapon (sight alignment and sight picture)

(2) Fire the weapon without disturbing the aim

What must Soldiers master to accomplish the two truths (Properly point the weapon, and Fire the weapon without disturbing the aim) to achieve well-aimed shots?

Sight alignment–the relationship between the aiming device and the firer’s eye- Sight picture–the placement of the aligned sights on the target- Trigger control–the skillful manipulation of the trigger that causes the rifle to fire without disturbing the aim

What are the functional elements a Soldier must establish, maintain, and sustain that is required to achieve an accurate shot?

1. Stability

2. Aim

3. Control

4. Movement

Upon what three skill sets are detection skills built?

1. Scan and search

2. Acquire

3. Locate

What four functions provide stability?

1. Support

2. Muscle relaxation

3. Natural point of aim

4. Recoil management

What are the six primary carry positions?

(1) Hang

(2) Safe hang

(3) Collapsed low ready

(4) Low ready

(5) High ready

(6) Ready (or ready-up)

Which primary carry position is used when Soldiers need their hands for other tasks and no threat is present or likely?

The hang

Which primary carry position is used when no immediate threat is present and the hands are not necessary?

The safe hang

Which primary carry position is used when a greater degree of muzzle control and readiness to respond to threats or weapon retention is necessary (such as crowded environments)?

The collapsed low ready

Which primary carry position provides the highest level of readiness and with the maximum amount of observable area for target acquisition purposes?

The low ready

Which primary carry position is used when the Soldier’s sector of fire includes areas overhead or when an elevated muzzle orientation is appropriate for safety?

The high ready .

Used when contact is highly likely

Which primary carry position is used when enemy contact is imminent?

The ready

What are the 12 firing positions with variations that are common to all Soldiers?

- Standing – unsupported; supported- Squatting- Kneeling – unsupported; supported- Sitting – crossed ankle; crossed leg; open leg- Prone – unsupported; supported; roll-over; reverse roll-over

What term describes the relationship between the aiming device and the firer’s eye?

Site alignment

What term describes the placement of the aligned sights on the target itself?

Site picture
