Matter
Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass.
Matter exists in one of three states: solid, liquid, or gas.
Can be changed physically (ice to water) and chemically (fermenting grapes).
Solids
Solids (eg: bones and teeth) have a definite shape and volume.
Liquids
Liquids (eg: blood and interstitial fluid) have a definite volume, but conform to the shape of their container.
Gases
Gases (eg: air we breathe) have no shape nor definite volume but still have weight.
Energy
Energy has no weight and takes up no space.
Is only measured by its effects on matter (kinetic and potential).
Forms of energy
Kinetic - Energy of motion.
Potential - Stored energy with ability to to used for motion.
Chemical energy.
Stored in the bonds of chemical substances.
Eg: The body processing food of nutrients.
Electrical energy
Results in the movement of charged particles.
Eg: Nervous system uses electrical currents called 'nerve impulses to transmit messages from one part of the body to another.
Mechanical energy
Is energy involved with directly moving matter.
Eg: Riding a bike - muscles in legs shorten, pulling on bones, causing limbs to moves - so you can pedal bike.
Radiant energy
Travels in waves:
- X-ray
- Infared (heat energy)
- Visible light (eg: stimulates retinas in eyes for sight.)
- Ultra Violet (eg: causes sunburn but also stimulates the body to make Vit. D.)
- Radiowaves
Elements
An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into any simpler substances by ordinary chemical method.
What are the four elements that make up 96% of human body weight?
O - Oxygen - 65%
C - Carbon - 18.5%
H - Hydrogen - 9.5%
N - Nitrogen - 3.2%
What are the nine lesser elements that make up the human body?
Ca - Calcium - 1.5%
P - Phosphorus - 1.0%
K - Potassium - 0.4%
S - Sulfur - 0.3%
Na - Sodium - 0.2%
Cl - Chlorine - 0.2%
I - Iodine - 0.1%
Fe - Iron - 0.1%
What are the trace elements found in the human body?
All less than 0.01%
Cr - Chromium
Co - Cobalt
Cu - Copper
F - Fluorine
Mv - Magnesium
Mo - Molybdenum
V - Vanadium
Zn - Zinc
