Baroque Era (1600-1750)
A time of turbulent change in a society that saw religious wars (Protestant vs. Catholics) as well as exploration and colonization of the New World.
Baroque
Exaggerated, abnormal, bizarre.
Monody
Solo song with instrumental accompaniment.
Camerata
Group of Florentine writers, artist, musicians. Name derived from the Italian word salon.
Figured bass
A numeral above or below the base note indicating the chords required. It allowed performers to improvise the chords. aka Basso Continuo, often allowed to instrumentalist for the accompaniment.
Major- Minor Tonality
A harmonic system based on the use of major and minor scales. Widely practice from the 17th century to the late 19th century.
Equal temperament
A tuning system based on the division of the octave into 12 equal half steps. This system is used today. Allowed instruments to play in any key.
Doctrine of the Affection
baroque doctrine of the union of text and music.
Opera
most important genre of the Baroque era, a large scale music drama that combines poetry, acting, scenery, and costumes with singing and instrumental music.
Components of Opera
overture (an introductory movement), solo arias (lyrical songs) and recitatives (speech like declamations of text).
Librettist // Libretto
writes the text of the opera // the text or script of the opera.
Claudio Monteverdi
early Baroque master.. wrote operas based on mythological and roman history.
Henry Purcell
wrote Dido and Aeneas based on The Aeneid.
Barbara Strozzi
a noted singer and composer .. her expressive solo arias foreshadowed the three part DA CAPO STRUCTURE which became standard by the late Baroque.

Masque
A type of entertainment that combines vocal and instrumental music with poetry and dance, became popular among the aristocrats.
Cantatas
Means to sing, serves the thriving Lutheran Church.. written mostly by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Oratorio
A large-scale dramatic genre with a sacred text performed by solo voices, chorus and orchestra it is not staged or costume.
Wachet auf
(sleepers, awake) written by Bach based on a well known protestant chorale tune.
George Frederic Handel
well known for Italian operas and his english-texted oratorios(including Messiah)
Suite
The Baroque suite is a group of dances usually in the same key.. standard dances are the allemande, courante, sarabande and gigue.
Jean Joseph Mouret
ensemble suites were probably meant for outdoor festivals at the French Royal Court.
