What is statistics?
It is a discipline in which mathematics and probability are applied in ways that allow researchers to make sense of their data
What is a frequency distribution?
It is a tally of the number of times each score is represented in a data set

How do you find cumulative frequency?
It is formed by adding the relative frequencies of the scores up to and including the score of interest
How do you calculate the adjusted frequency?
by dividing the number of observations for each score by the number of valid scores for each variable, rather than by the number of participants
What is a grouped frequency distribution?
It is when scores are grouped together
What is a disadvantage of the grouped frequency distribution?
Information may be lost

It is the difference between the highest and the lowest values in the distribution
What is the variance?
It is a measure of variability that, like the mean, requires that every score in the distribution be used in its calculation.
What does the deviation score indicate?
How high or how low a raw score is compared with the mean
How do you generate a non-zero index of the variability within a data set?
We must square the deviation scores. We then calculate the population variance by determining the mean of the squared deviations

It rests on the concept of degrees of freedom

Ex: in a sample of 10 values with a known mean, nine of the values are "free" to fluctuate, as long as the investigator has control over the final value

Using the degrees of freedom for the mean as the denominator of the sample variance formula leads to an unbiased estimation of the population variance

It is the likelihood that it will detect a difference when one exists.
