Adagio
Slow, sustained movement

A series of very slow movements performed together to look graceful and effortless, floating. It can also mean the beginning of a pas de deux dance where a man and woman dance together, performing slow lifts, turns, and other supported steps.

To stretch or elongate, usually referring to stretching and straightening a leg or arm.
Arabesque
When you stand on one leg with the other leg extended straight back.

Arri'ere
A step that is performed backwards, en arrirer.
Assemble
This means to bring together. It is a step where the working foot slides against the ground before swinging it up into the air.
Attitude
The working leg is raised, bent from the knee at an angle 90 degrees and turned out so that the knee is the same level as the foot. This position can be done from the front, side, or back.
Attitude devant
The leg is in attitude in from of the body
Attitude deri'erre
The leg is in attitude in the back of the body
Avant
Means forward. En avant is any step moving forward
Balance'
a series of steps that swing in a balancing motion, often several together.
Battement
To beat. Movement of the leg.
Battement Tendu
An exercise in which the leg is extended to the front, side, or back and generally repeated several times. When the leg is fully extended, the knee should be straight with the foot pointed.
Batterie
Beating, A general term used to describe the beating of the legs.
Pas de bourr'ee
A movement done as a series of three steps.

Ex: Right leg back in 5th position, pick up the back leg (coupe') to the back of the ankle
of the ankle of the supporting leg, (sur le cou-de-pieds en arrie're) step up on the right leg, step side on the left leg, close the right leg to 5th position front
Chanie'
Series of connected movements.

Ex: make half-turns in 1st position traveling to the side
Chasse'
To glide. A smooth gliding movement that can be either front, side, or back.
pas de chat
step of the cat, a jump from one foot to the other, and when in the air both feet are off the ground.
sur le cou-de-pieds
Upon the neck of the foot, sur le cow-de-pieds, back, or front.
Coupe'
To cut; a movement that calls for the foot to be sharply pulled off the floor placed either in front or back of the ankle.
Demi-plie'
Small bend; a movement fundamental to ballet that calls for the knee or knees to bend in alignment over the toes with ought causing the heel, or heels, of the foot to lift off the floor.

To face; a basic position that calls for the dancer to face the front.

To melt; a movement that calls for the dancer to stand on one foot, bending and extending both legs at the same time.
Foutte'
To whip; a movement on one leg that requires the dancer to change the hip and torso direction while maintaining the leg direction and position.
Frappe'
To strike powerfully; a quick action of the leg.
Grand jete'
Large throw; to fling; a large jump that is done from one foot to the other.

Large turn; a turn with the leg extended to the side that is usually executed by the male dancer as virtuoso movement in a series of turns; in its single
Grand ronds de jambes
A large movement of the leg that requires both the dancer to either have the leg travel from the front to the back in a large half-circle (en dehors) or circling in the rear.
Ronds de jambes
Circling of the legs; a movement that calls for the dancer to move the leg in a circle; this can be done on the floor, off the floor, at 45 degrees, 90 degrees, or 120 degrees, or inward (en dehors)
