After the Bosnia-Herzegovina war, NATO remained in Sarajevo with the goal of assisting the Bosnia and Herzegovina authorities with security reforms. NATO’s primary goal in Afghanistan is to assist the Afghan authorities in providing effective security across the country. In both instances, NATO’s goal was to enhance the general safety and security in the areas.
During the war in Afghanistan, the US began an aerial bombing campaign with the goal of weakening the Taliban’s defenses. In the Kosovo war, NATO dropped bombs in the area with the objective of weakening the Yugoslav Army. Aerial bombing was used in both wars to debilitate the opposition and aid the countries’ civilians. The intentions of the bombings were to protect the countries’ safety and security from harmful opposition forces.
The ethnic cleansing of Bosnians led by Serb and Croat forces characterized the Bosnian War. This ethnic cleansing included the mass raping of an estimated 20,000 to 50,000 women, including young girls. As well, in Afghanistan, Afghan police and soldiers routinely rape young boys, abducting them and keeping them as sex slaves. The safety and security, as well as the beliefs and values of these children were destroyed in both wars. Human rights violations against minors by figures of authority were present in both countries during the conflicts.
