Introduction

Early taxonomists classified organisms as plants and animals.

Bacteria and other unicellular eukaryotic organisms with chloroplast were classified under plants because of their rigid cell wall.

Fungi was classified under plants because of its stationary nature.

Unicellular eukaryotes that move and ingest food were classified as animals.

Botanists and zoologists claimed those that move and were photosynthetic and moved as both.

Taxonomy in early days.

Whittaker’s 5-kingdom classification

It was adopted in the late 1960s. This classification was based on their cell wall and mode of nutrition.

*Monera (Prokaryotes).

*Animaliae.

*Plantae.

*Fungi.

*Protista (different unicellular organisms)

Disadvantages of this system.

*Phlogenics based on genetic data revealed a problem with this system.

*Prokaryotes differ from each other as much as eukaryotes.

Whittaker

Woese domain method of classification.

It was based on genetic advances, cell biology, biochemistry and other factors. It is a higher classification than the kingdom.

It was classified into three;

*Bacteria (true bacteria): Single celled, lack of nucleus.

Archaea (ancient bacteria): similar to bacteria, possesses different genes for managing and reading out DNA.

Eukarya (Eukaryotes, including animals and plants): Cells with nucleus.
