Cholera
What are the main properties of Vibrio cholerae ?
gram negative

facultatively aerobic

curved rods
Where is Vibrio cholerae found?
Brakish waters and estuaries (Flussmündung).
How does transmission of V. cholerae happen?
By contaminated water ( has high ID).
What is the virulence factor of V. cholerae?
Production od cholera toxin.
what are the symptoms of cholera?
Watery diarrhia,

Muscle cramps as water and electrolytes are lost from tissue.
What does the cholera toxin do?
Causes host cells to secrete Cl-, HCO- and water.
How does V. cholerae invade into the host cells?
Adhesion to epithelium,
activation of type III secretion system,
bacterial ubstance enters the cell by ENDOCYTOSIS,
multiplication within PHAGOSOME
discharged by EXOCYTOSIS,
INFLAMMATORY response > fluid secretion > DIARRHIA
What is HEPATITIS in general?
Inflammation of the liver.
Where does HEPATITIS result from?
drugs/chemical toxicity,

Epstein-Barr virus (EB)

Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

Hepatitis viruses (A-E)
What kind of virus is the Hepatitis A virus?
RNA picornavirus, lacking of envelope, free RNA.
What is the host of Hepatitis A?
Humans only.
How does the Hepatitis A enter the human body and where does it spread?
Via oral route (food or water).
Multiplication in intestinal epithelia,
spread to liver, kidney, spleen (MIlz).
How can Hepatitis A be found first?
In feces highest numbers are present before symptoms appear.
What is the incubation period of Hepatitis A?
Average 30 days,
Range 15-50 days.
What are the symptoms of the acute disease of Hepatitis A?
anorexia, malaise, nausea, diarrhia, abdominal discompfort, fever, jaundice (Gelbsucht).
Virus only shed during acute state.
What kind of Infection is Hepatitis A?
NO chronic infection, protective antibodies are developed as response to infection > Lifelong immunity!
what kind of Virus is Hepaptitis B?
DNA Hepadnavirus, enveloped.
Three distict particles...
high infection rate for people whoa re in contact with blood in daily life.
