What is the use of Zone Transfer ?
Zone Transfer helps replicate DNS Zone Data from one DNS Server to another so that multiple DNS servers can cater to a zone.
Zone transfers are used in AD DS ?
Zone transfers are used only for zones that are not integrated into the Active Directory (AD).
Both primary and secondary DNS servers can perform zone transfers.
Both primary and secondary DNS servers can perform zone transfers.
A zone transfer can occur when:
* the refresh interval has expired for a zone

* a notification to make changes in the zone file is sent by the primary server to a secondary server

* a secondary server queries the primary DNS server for a change in the zone

* a DNS console at a secondary server for the zone manually initiates a transfer from the primary server
A zone transfer may be either
a full zone transfer
an incremental zone transfer (IXFR)
a full zone transfer
In a full zone transfer, the entire DNS database is transferred using an Asynchronous Full Transfer Zone (AXFR) query to update the zone data on another DNS server.

This type of zone transfer is used for DNS servers on computers running operating systems earlier than Windows Server 2003, and when a new DNS server is configured for the first time.
an incremental zone transfer (IXFR)
Only Differential Data is transfered from one Zone to another
Incremental zone transfer (IXFR) is the standard method of Zone Transfer in Windows Server 2008

The following two DNS-specific application directory partitions are created when AD is installed or upgraded on a domain controller:
ForestDNSZone
DomainDNSZone
You can create a custom application directory domain partition on an AD DS-integrated DNS zone by using the dnscmd command-line utility.

To check if the application directory partition was created successfully, you use the dnscmd command with the /enumdirectorypartitions option.
