What is competition between species?
Two species using the same resource compete if the amount of the resource used by each species reduces the amount available to the other species.
What is herbivory between species?
A primary consumer feeding on a plant or other producer. The producer's growth affects the food availablitiy for the herbivore.
What is predation between species?
A consumer feeding on another consumer. The numbers and behavior of the prey affect the predator.
What is parasitism between species?
A parasite is an organism that lives on or in a host and obtains food from it. The host is always harmed by the parasite.
What is mutualism between species?
Mutualists are members of a different species that live together in a close relationship, from which both benefit.
Define gross production
the total amount of organic matter produced by plants in an ecosystem.
Define net production
The amount of gross production of an ecosystem remaining after subtracting the amount used by plants in respiration
Define biomass
The total dry mass of organic matter in organisms or ecosystems
Net production= ____________ - ____________
gross production- respiration
Describe ecological succession
An ecological succession is a series of changes to an ecosystem, caused by complex interactions between the community of living orgamisms and the abiotic enviornment. As a result, some species die out and others join the community.
Why is it hard to classify some organisms into trophic levels?
Because sometimes an organisms belongs to more then one trophic level (parrly in one trophic level and partly in another)
When an organism belongs in more than 1 trophic level, which level are they classified into?
They are classified according to its main food source.
Losses of energy in ecosystems are accompanied by losses of _______________
biomass

Since energy is lost along trophic levels, higher trophic levles usually contain very small numbers of large organisms with a low total biomass
The energy content per gram of food decreases along a food chain. True or False?
False, the energy content per gram of food remains the same along a food chain.
