Bumper Supports / Brackets

Support for the bumper (face bar) and guards. Attaches the bumper to the vehicle structure.

Battery

A device that stores electrical energy. Primary function is to provide power to the vehicle's starter. The battery is considered to be part of the vehicle's starting system.

Bell Housing

The housing surrounding the flywheel/flexplate and the clutch or torque converter. Usually part of the transmission case.

Betterment or Depreciation

When a part of the auto must be replaced by a new part and that part has a life span less than the entire car, the insured will receive more value than he/she is entitled to. Because his/her economic condition will be "bettered", we will subtract a fair percentage which he/she should pay. Therefore, the insured will be placed in the same economic position after the loss as before. The percentage is called depreciation or betterment and usually taken on such items as tires, batteries, convertible tops, etc., etc., when they are worn or have depreciated. Schedules of average rates for all depreciable items are listed in section 6-Loss Control.

Bezel

A chrome or plastic rim surrounding a parking, tail lamp lens, or headlamp.

Bonding Lining

A method is cementing brake linings to shoes or pads which eliminates the necessity of rivets.

Boron Steel

Steel similar to ultra high strength steel. Boron steel is usually not repairable.

Brake Bleeding

The procedure for removing air from the line of a hydraulic brake system.

Brake Caliper

A disc brake component which contains the piston(s) and brake pads. The caliper produces A clamping action on a rotating disc.

Brake Cylinder

A cylinder containing a moveable piston which is actuated by hydraulic pressure to move the brake shoes against the braking surface of the brake drum.

Brake Disc / Rotor

A disc or rotor attached to the wheel hub against which the brake pads are forced to slow/stop the vehicle.

Brake Drum

A metal drum that attaches to the axle flange and surrounds the brake shoes. The brake shoes press against the brake drum's inner surface to slow/stop the vehicle.

Brake Fade

A condition wherein repeated severe applications of the brakes result in impaired braking ability.

Brake Fluid

A group of specialized fluids used in hydraulic brake systems which must meet exacting conditions and standards.

Brake Lining

The material having a suitable coefficient of friction which is attached to the brake pad/shoe and which contacts the brake rotor/drum to slow/stop vehicle.

Brake Pad / Shoe

The carrier to which the brake lining is bonded or riveted, which is used to force the lining in contact with the brake rotor/drum.

Bumper / Face Bar / Fascia (Cover)

The appearance part at the front and rear of the vehicle which provides parking protection in minor collisions for sheet-metal parts. They can be made of chromed steel, aluminum, or plastic. Bumper or face bar is the correct nomenclature for the chromed and aluminum bars and fascia or cover is a correct nomenclature for the plastic covers.
