What are the layers in a hair follicle?

from outside-in: Cutile, Cortex, Medula

Why does hair curl?

Straight hair has a round follicle, while curly has a flat or elliptical-shaped follicle.

Types of Texture Language

Straight, Wavy, Curly, and Coily.

Straight Hair

Hair with no wave pattern.

Wavy Hair

Hair with loose, S-shaped wave pattern (wave diameter from water bottle width to three-finger width.

Curly Hair

Hair with well-defined, tight and springy curl pattern (curl diameter ranges from piece of sidewalk chalk to a drinking straw)



Coily Hair

Hair with a tight, thick coil pattern (coil diameter ranges from a crochet needle to almost no diameter)

Curl Patterns

Subtle (loose), Medium, Strong (tight)

Hair Density

Number of hair strands on a persons head, or how closely packed together hair strands are per square inch on an individual's scalp. Categorized Thin, Medium, Thick.

Determining Hair Density: Long Hair

Long Hair: Ponytail with less than 2-inch circ. is Thin, 2-4 inch circ. is Medium, and more than 4-inch circ. is Thick

Determining Hair Density: Short Hair

If you can clearly see the scalp, it is Thin; see some of the scalp, it is Medium; see none of the scalp, it is Thick.

Diameter of Hair Strand

Fine, Medium, or Course: the larger the strand, the more course the hair.

Product Recommendations for Diameter of Hair

Thin, recommend products with "grip," adds hold and expands hair strand without weighing down.


Thick, recommend products with "slip," adds oil/shine and contracts hair strand to make curl smooth and controlled.



Consistency of Hair

Feeling of hair, Smooth, Medium, or Rough.

Determining Consistency

Uncolored, natural hair, Smooth will have a natural sheen, Rough will be more matte. Medium will be inconsistent.

Environmental Damage to Hair

Caused by environmental factors, e.g. water, sun. Generally leads to lack of moisture in hair. Can be remedied by adding moisture into hair.

Mechanical Damage to Hair

Caused by styling tools such as curling iron. Hair feels dry and may have some breakage. To remedy add moisture and/or protein back into hair.

Chemical Damage to Hair

Caused by chemicals such as color. Breaks down strength of hair, causing weak spots. To remedy, strengthen by adding protein back into the hair.

Scalp Conditions

Any imbalance guest may experience with their scalp.



Scalp Condition: Normal

Normal: "Healthy"

Scalp Condition: Dry

Dry: "Itchy, flaky, tight, uncomfortable."

Scalp Condition: Red/Irritated

Red/Irritated: "Red, hot, scales or flakes, irritated, itchy"

Scalp Condition: Oily

Oily: "Slick, oily, shiny"

Scalp Condition: Thinning

Thinning: "Sparse density, blocked pores (in some cases)"
