There are different opinions among doctors, parents, and experts about what causes autism and how best to treat it, but also there is much that we still don’t know. Although autism is present at birth (congenital), signs of the disorder can be difficult to identify or diagnose during infancy.Sometimes, a child with autism will start to talk at the same time as other children the same age, then lose his or her language skills

Dr. Leo Kanner first described autism in 1943. "When Derek was diagnosed with autism, the doctors told my parents he would never speak; and when he spoke, they said he’d never be able to learn math. Once he excelled in advanced math classes, they said he wouldn’t be able to graduate high school. When he passed the state-mandated MCAS testing on his first try, he moved on to college. When he continued to prove everyone wrong, the doctors were the only ones left speechless." A typical diagnostic evaluation involves a multi-disciplinary team of doctors including a pediatrician, psychologist, speech and language pathologist and occupational therapist. Presently, we don’t have a medical test that can diagnose autism. Often parents are the first to notice that their child is showing unusual behaviors such as failing to make eye contact, not responding to his or her name or playing with toys in unusual, repetitive ways.Unfortunately, doctors unfamiliar with diagnosing autism sometimes dismiss parent concerns, delaying diagnosis and the opportunity for early intervention therapies.
