Normal <25dB (adult) or <15 dB (child)
Minimal 15-25 dB HL (child)
Mild 26-40 dB HL
Moderate 41-55 dB HL
Moderate-Severe 56-70 dB HL
Severe 71-90 dB HL
Profound >90 dB HL
What are the four types of communication methods?
Oral
Aural
Manual
Combined oral and manual
What are screening measures for infants?
Screening Tympanometry, Screening Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE's), and Screening Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)
What is Dynamic Range?
The range from the softest sound you can hear to the loudest
List parts of a hearing aid.
Microphone, Amplifier, Receiver, Battery
What is "gain"?
The amount of amplification used in a hearing aid; There are formulas to determine this depending on the hearing loss.
What is the candidacy for children?
Children- 25 months to 17 yearsl severe to profound SNHL bilaterallyl MLNT scores of 30% of less in best aided condition; LNT scores of 30% or less in best aided condition; lack of profess in the development of auditory skills; no medical contraindications; high motivation and appropriate expectations
What is the candidacy for adults for cochlear implants?
Moderate to profound SNHL bilaterally; 50% or less sentence recognition in implanted ear; 60% or less sentence recognition in opposite ear or binaurally; pre-linguistic or post-linguistic onset of moderate to profound SNHL; no medical contraindications; a desire to be part of the hearing world
Who make up the cochlear implant team?
Surgeon; audiologistl SLP; psychologist
What is BAHA and who would use it?
Bone Anchored Hearing Aid- implant where an abutment is drilled into the mastoid, a speech processor is then snapped onto the abutment and sound is conducted via bone conduction to the cochlea.
Good for kids with permanent middle ear anomalies, those without ear canals, those with recurrect ear infections, single sided deafness. Minimum age is 5
What is mapping?
Going through each of the channels a threshold (softest level heard) and comfort levels (loudest comfortable level heard) are established. It is programmed like doing an audiogram for thresholds.
What are risk factors related to performing hearing screenings?
Potential for infection; inaccurate screening results based on equipment malfunction; inaccurate screening results based on errors in calibration; inaccurate screening results based on test mistakes
What is auditory training?
A systematic program for persons with hearing impairment to utilize their residual hearing to maximize speech recognition and interpretation of auditory experiences
Why do children who have hearing impairment usually have some language delay?
Early language development is dependent upon communication between babies and their parents, young hearing impaired children may miss out on important utterances. Also, parents may alter their communication style if they know their baby is HI.
When is APGAR done for a newborn?
60 seconds and then again at 5 minutes
True or False: Non-genetic causes are thought to be the cause of 50% of congenital HL
False; Genetic causes are through to be the cause of 50% of congenital HL
What is Auditory Dys-synchrony or Auditory Neuropathy?
The cochlea is functioning appropriately, however the neural pathway is not functioning normally.
What are some treatments for Otitis Media?
Wait it out; Antibiotics; PE Tubes; Short term amplification
The cochlea should be developed by ____ weeks.
20
What is DIAL?
Developmental Index for Audition and Listening (month by month description of developmental listening)
What is IT-MAIS?
Infant Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (Structured interview scheduel designed to assess the child's spontaneous responses to sound in his/her everyday environment.
What is the most popular type of hearing aid for children?
Behind the ear because they are still growing and would need new molds frequently
What is PL 94-142?
