Augustine’s Theodicy
A defence of the existence of God in the face of evil. It is a religious response to the problem of evil.
Augustine and Irenaeus came up with theodicies to defend God’s existence from the problem of evil.
God is responsible for evil to an extent- because he created the world. But it is human free will that caused evil to enter the world in the first place.
God created human beings to be perfect
In the Fall of Man, Adam and Eve eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. This is the first sin. From this, sin enters the world.
The relationship that humans enjoyed with God was broken, and humans became separated from God.
Moral evil enters the world with Adam’s first sin. Natural evil is a result of a lack of harmony in nature after the Fall, due to fallen angels and demons.
This Original Sin is passed down, inherited, from Adam and Eve all the way to us. It is what makes us capable of moral evil. Free will is what brought Original Sin into the world.
Augustine defines evil as a ‘privation’ or lack of good. McCabe gives examples of bad grapes deck chair. They are bad because they fail to live up to expectations. This is the same for a human being.
Soul-deciding
Begins with the assumption that God exists, that God created the universe, that God is good (omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent).
