Researchers: Schaffer & Emerson (1964)



Aim: to investigate the formation of early attachments; in particular the age at which they developed, their emotional intensity and to whom they were directed.



Sample: 60 babies from working-class families in Glasgow.



Method:


1) Babies and their mothers were visited at home every month for the first year and again at 18 months.



2) Researcher asked mothers questions about the protest behaviour their infant showed in 7 everyday separations e.g. caregiver leaving the room.



3) This was designed to measure the infant's attachment.
