Blind Transmision
a transmission from one station to another in circumstances where two-way communication cannot be established but where it is believed the called station is able to receive the transmision
Broadcast
a transmission of information relating to air navigation that is not addressed to a specific station or stations
Clearnace Limit
the point ti which an aircraft is granted an air traffic control clearance
Communication Centre
an aeronautical fixed station which relays telecomunication traffic from or to a number of other aeronautical fixed stations directly connected to it
Control Area
a controlled airspace extending upwards from a specified limit above the earths surface
Controlled Airspace
an airspace of defined dimensions within which an air traffic control service is provided to IFR flights and to VFR flights in accordnace with the airspace classification
Control Zone
a controlled airspace extending upwards from the surface of the earth to a specified upper limit
Crusing Level
a level during a significant portion
Descision Altitude/Height
a specified altitude/height in a precision aprroach at which a missed approach must be initiated if the required visual references to continue the approach to land have not been established
Duplex
a method in which telcommunications between two station can take place in both directions simultaneously
Elevation
the vertical distance of a point or level on, or affixed to, the surface of the earth measured from mean sea level
Estimated Time of Arrival
the time at which the pilot estimates that the aircraft will be overhead a specific location
Expect Approach Time
the time at which ATC expects that an arriving aircraft, following a delay, will leave the holding point to commence an approach for landing
Flight Information Centre
a unit established to promote flight information services and alerting services
Flight Level
a surface of constant atmospheric pressure, which is related to a specific pressure datum, 1013.2mb, and is separated from other such surfaces by specific pressure intervals
Flight Plan
specified information provided to air traffic service units, relative to an intended flight of an aircraft, flight plans fall into two categories which are full or abbreviated.
General Air Traffic
flights operating in accordance with civil air traffic procedures
Ground-to-Air Comunications
one-way communication from stations or locations on the surface of the earth to aircraft
Heading
the direction in which the longditudal axis of the aircraft is pointing usually expressed in degrees from North (true, magnetic, compass or grid)
Holding Point
a specified location, identified by usual or other means in the vicinity of which the position of an aircraft in flight is maintained in accordance with ATC clearances

Instrument Meteorological Conditions
meteorological conditions expressed in terms of visibility, vertical and horizontal distance from cloud, less than the miminma specified for visual meteorological conditions
Interpilot air-to-air communications
two-way communication on a designated air-to-air channel to enable aircraft engaged in flights in remote or oceanic areas out of range of CHF ground stations to exchange operational information
Known Traffic
traffic, the current flight details of which are known to controller concerned through direct communication or co-ordination
Level
a generic term relating to the various positions of an aircraft in flight and meaning variously height, altitude or flight level
Manouvering Area
that part of an aerodrome used for the take-off, landing and taxying of aircraft, excluding the aprons
Minimum Descent Altitude/Height
an altitude/height in a non-precision or circling approach below which descent must not be made without visual reference
Missed Approach Point
the point in an instrument approach at or before which the prescribed missed approach procedure must be initiated in order to ensure that the minimum obstacle clearance is not infringed
Missed Approach Procedure
the procedure to be followed if the approach cannot be continued
Mobile Surface Station
a station in the aeronautical telecommunications service, other than an aircraft station, intended to to be used while in motion or during halts at unspecified points
Movement Area
the manouvering area and the aprons

an aeronautical station forming part of a radiotelephony network

Procedure Turn
a manoeuvre in which a turn is made away from a designated track followed by a turn in the opposite direction to permit the aircraft to intercept and proceed along the reciprocal of the original track
Radar Approach
an approach, executed by an aircraft, under the direction of a radar controller
Radar Contact
the situation which exists when the radar return or radar position symbol of a particualr aircraft is seen and identiifed on a radar display
Radar Identification
the process or correlating a particualr radar return or radar position symbol with a specific aircraft
Radar Vectoring
provision of navigation guidance to an aircraft in the form of specific headings, based on the use of radar
Radio Direction-Finding Station
a radio station intended to determine only the direction of other stations by means of transmissions from the latter
Radiotelephony Network
a group of radiotelephony aeronautical stations which operate on and guard frequencies from the same family and which support each other in a defined manner to ensure maximum dependability of air-ground communications and dissemination of air-ground traffic
Readback
a procedure whereby the receiving station repeats a received message or an appropriate part thereof back to the transmitting station so obtain confirmation of correct reception
Regular Station
a station selected from those form an enroute air-ground radiotelephony network to communicate with or to intercept communications from aircraft in normal conditions
Reporting Point
a specified geographical location in relation to which the position of an aircraft can be reported
Runway
a defined rectangualr area on a land aerodrome prepared for the landing and taking-off of aircraft
Runway Visual Range
the range over which the pilot of an aircraft on the centreline of a runway can expect to see the runway surface markings, or the lights delineeating the runway or it's centreline
Signal Area
an area on an aerodrome used for the display of ground signals
SIGMET Information
information issued by a meteorological watch office concerning the occurence or expected occurence of specified en-route weather phenomena which may affect the safety of aircraft operations
Simplex
a method in which telecomunication between stations happens in one direction at a time
Telcommunication
any transmission, emission or reception of signs, signals, writing, images and sounds or intelligance of any nature by wire, radio, optical or other electromagnetic means
Terminal Control Area
a control area normally established at the confluence of airways in the vicinity of one or more major aerodromes
Threshold
the beginning of that postion of the runway suitable for the landing of aircraft
