Daltons Theory |
all matter were tiny indestructible balls (billard ball). |
🎱 |
|
Thomsons Theory and experiment |
The cathode ray experiment involving negatively charged particles being bent by positive and negative plates proving that previously neutral atoms must also contain positive and negative charges developing the raisin bun/blueberry muffin model (atoms are positive with negative electrons mixed in) |

|
Rutherfords Experiment |
Rutherford shot positively charged alpha particles at a piece of gold foil surrounded by a screen. Most of the atoms went straight through but occasionally one would bounce off. This led rutherford to conclude that atoms weren’t just “balls” but actually empty space with a very small but dense nucleus which created the beehive model. |

|
Chadwicks Observation |
Chadwick observed that the nucleus of atoms was not made up of solely positive charges which meant that there was a third particle with no charge (neutral) which was called neutrons. |

Bohrs Experiment |
Bohrs experiment used light rays of white light and various elements which showed that white light created a continuous spectrum through a spectroscope while the elements had a discontinuous one. Hot gases created emission line spectrums where the colour appeared in thin lines and the rest was black due to the electrons releasing energy at those points. Cold gases created absorption spectrums where the colour appeared where the black was before and the black appeared in lines where the colour was on emission spectrums. This created the bohr model which has electrons orbiting on discrete circular energy levels called orbits. |

|
De Broglie |
Originated the idea that the electron had wave properties that can only be multiples of whole numbers. |
🌊 |
|
Schrödinger |
Developed a mathematical wave equation to calculate the position of electrons in energy levels. |
🟰 |
|
Heisenberg |
Developed the uncertainty principle which states that it is impossible to simultaneously know the exact position and speed of an electron |
