Why is the 4-level laser more efficient than the 3-level laser? |
3L requires population inversion with the ground-state. i.e. N2/N1>1.4L requires population inversion such that N3/N2>1.Electrons tend to decay into the ground state. Therefore 3L requires a lot of pumping of electrons from N1 to N3 in order to achieve lasing. |
