Advection fog?
air migrates from one locatioin to a new location and
conditions at the new location are right to condense an air mass into a fog
Evaporation fog?
The warm waters from the Gulf stream are brought north, evaporates, and condenses in the colder air off of the coast. The warm water evaporates into the cold air and creates a dense thick fog (sea smoke).
Radiation fog?
It is formed as a
ground surface radiatively cools and the air just above the ground surface condenses and forms a fog.
Convergent lifting?
air that converges from an area of high pressure into a zone of low pressure.
Air is lifted as it rises with heat created from a warm source such as land, a dark field or a paved road.
Convectional lifting
Orographic lifting?
the process of forcing air masses to lift over mountains.
The air mass is forced to rise, cools, condense and rain on the
windward (slope that’s the windiest) side of the slope. It then descends, warms and speeds up on the leeward side of a mountain.
Orographic precipitation
Rain shadow
the leeward side of a mountain where precipitation is drastically
cut by the process of adiabatic warming
A process of dry adiabatic warming on the leeward side of
mountains that brings warm dry descending air and winds
Chinooks
Frontal lifting
where two air masses of with different characteristics
meet (to do ‘battle').
What kind of clouds are formed along a cold front?
Cumulonimbus and cumulus clouds
How long does a passing cold front take to go by?
1/2 hour to as much as a few hours.
What conditions do passing cold fronts bring?
extreme thunderstorms and precipitation
A warm front slowly pushes away cold air. It forms along a leading edge that instead of being abrupt, is very passive.
A Warm Front
How long does it take for a warm front to pass?
12 hours
Occluded front
where a cold front completely overtakes a warm front. this produces a shitton of rain.
