34 Cards in this Set

  • Back

Skull

Group of 22 plate-like bones that compose the framework of the head

Cranium

Eight skull segments joined by suture joints that encase the brain in an egg-shaped structure

Frontal

Broad bone of the forehead and forward roof of the skull

Frontal eminences

Two lateral swellings that blend into the general swelling of the forehead

Supercilliary crests

Brow ridges above the inner ends of the orbits

Zygomatic process

Orbital rims terminate and join to the zygomatic bone (cheekbone) via this process

Glabella

Small depression separating the brow ridges above the root of the nose

Occipital

Back of the head

Occipital condyles

Two knob-like ellipsoid joints that permit the rocking movements of the head as when we nod a 'yes'

Occipital crest

Medial line of the occipital

Occipital protuberance

Springboard for the fleshy contour of the neck

Parietals

Lie between frontal and occipital bones and form the upper side wall and rear vaulted roof of the skull

Parietal eminence

Point of greatest convexity in each parietal

Temporals

Form the lower side walls of the cranium in the region of the ear

Zygomatic arch

Project forward from each temporal to join the zygomatic bone (cheekbone) in the front

Mastoid process

Bulges downward to the rear of the 'ear hole'

Styloid process

A slender spur below the 'ear hole'

Sphenoid

Single bone that straddles the undersurface of the cranium, appearing in both side walls between the temporal and frontal bones at the regions known as the temples

Cranial sutures

Ragged edges that allow the bones of the cranium to fit tightly into each other

Temporal line

Arises from the outer end of the brow ridge and arches backward over the cranium

Temporal fossa

The hollow side wall of the temporal that is filled with jaw muscle

Face

14 bones that hand like a mask from beneath the small forward end of the ovoid cranium

Zygomatic bones

Cheekbones; prominent angular plates that fasten wing-like to the upper jaw and creat a 'balcony above the lower jaw

Nasal bones

Project less than an inch from beneath the wedge between the orbits

Maxillae

Jawbones; constitute the chief body of the upper jaw, give root to the teeth, and enter into the formation of the cheeks laterally and the wall of the nose above

Canine fossa

Where each maxilla sinks inward below the orbit (filled with cheek muscle)

Nasal spine

Pointed spur where the two maxillae join at the base of the inverted-heart-shaped nasal cavity

Dental arch

Where the teeth are socketed

Hard palate

Roof of the mouth

Mental tubercles

Small lumps at either side of the midline that give squareness to the chin (said to be most distinct in males)

Ramus

A broad, thin, blade that springs upward from the back of the jaw

Angle of the mandibular

Described by the lower border of the body and the rear border of the ramus; approximates 120 degrees

Coronoid process

Forward division of the ramus for attachment of the temporalis muscle of mastication

Condyloid process

Rear division of the ramus for articulation with the skull in the temporal bone at the front of the 'ear holes' (hinge joint)
