Quadriceps Contusion:
DEF: thigh bruise; most common of all thigh injuries
MOI: direct impact S/S: point tenderness; pain; ecchymosis; swelling; loss of function; loss of ROM Tx: PRICEMM; with stretch of quadriceps; pad |
Quadriceps Strain:
DEF: Pulled thigh muscle
MOI: excessive contraction or stretching S/S: pain; point tenderness; ecchymosis; swelling; loss of strength; loss of ROM; palpable depression Tx: PRICEMM; ROM work; strengthening |
Hamstring Strain:
DEF: Pulled hamstring; 2nd most common injury to thigh
MOI: strength imbalance; excessive forcible contraction; muscle fatigue; leg length discrepancy; tightness; faulty posture S/S: pain; point tenderness; swelling; ecchymosis; loss of strength; loss of ROM; palpable depression Tx: PRICEMM; ROM work; Rehab -Grade 1 should return fairly quickly -Grade 2 and 3 will take longer with chance of re-injury -mental status of athlete is one area of major concery |
Femoral Fractures:
DEF: broken leg; medical emergency due to resultant shock and loss of blood
MOI: direct blow; indirect force such as landing on an extended leg S/S: deformity with thigh rotated outward; shortened thigh caused by bone displacement; loss of function; pain; point tenderness; swelling of soft tissue |
Groin Strain:
DEF: pull of groin area (depression that lies between the thigh and the abdominal region); may include hip adductors; hip flexors or abdominal
MOI: excessive contraction or stretching S/S: pain; point tenderness; swelling; ecchymosis; loss of strength; loss of ROM; palpable depression Tx: PRICEMM; ROM work; strengthening (true adduction & hip flexion) *other concerns that it may be are: avulsion fracture; Osteitis Pubis; Sports Hernia |
Sports Hernia:
DEF: Athletic Pubalgia; "Gilmore's Groin"
Trochanteric Bursitis:
DEF: "snapping hip syndrome" bursitis of the greater trochanter; tendonitis of gluteus muscle insertion or IT band; more common in women runners with a large Q-angle
MOI: overuse; direct blow S/S: pain; point tenderness; inflammation; "snapping hip" Tx: PRICEMM; |
Dislocation of Hip Joint:
DEF: not a common injury, but very serious; posterior dislocations are more common
MOI: hip and knee are flexed at 90 degrees with a force exerted through shaft of femur; internal rotation force with firmly planted foot S/S: pain; loss of function; marked deformity Tx: immobilize; check distal pulse; transport *secondary problems: rupture of ligamentum teres leading to avascular necrosis (AVN) of femoral head; sciatic nerve involvement; osteoarthritis; labral tears |
Avascular Necrosis:
DEF: temporary or permanent loss of the blood supply to the proximal femur; without blood the bone tissue dies and causes a collapse of the joint surface
MOI: any injury causing loss of blood supply to the femur; hip dislocations S/S: joint pain weight bearing and resting; limited ROM; osteoarthritis; loss of joint fuction Tx: refer to MD; MRI; X-ray; CT-scan; ROM work |
Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease:
DEF: "coxa plana"; osteochondritis of upper femoral epiphysis leading to AVN; more common in skinny boys aged 3-12
MOI: Congenital; idiopathic S/S: chronic pain in groin, anterior thigh and/or knee; painless limp; loss of motion; hip flexion contracture Tx: refer to MD; x-ray |
Iliac Crest Contusion:
DEF: hip pointer
MOI: direct blow to iliac crest S/S: pain; point tenderness; ecchymosis Tx: PRICEMM; pad; R/O fractures to ASIS |
Pelvic Fractures:
DEF: fractures to the pelvic area include the innominate bones, sacrum, or coccyx
MOI: direct blow; indirect forces Tx: refer to MD *must be concerned with internal damages resulting from the fracture |
