Assyrians
Semitic speaking people who ruled the empire including Mesopotamia, and parts of Iran, Asia Minor, Syria, Israel, and Egypt.
King Ashurbanipal
Assyrian King who proposed torture and terroristic warfare of laying waste to conquered area and torturing POW’s.
Nebuchadnezzar
Chaldean King who made Babylonia the leading state in western Asia, and especially known for conquering Judah and destroying Jerusalem and taking population captive to Babylon.
Persians
Indo-European people who live in what is now Iran. Became an empire under the Achaemenid.
Cyrus
Persian King who united the Chaldeans, conquered the Assyrians and established the Persian Empire and the Achaemenid dynasty and was called Cyrus the Great.
Darius I
Ruled the Persian Empire from 521 B.C. to 486 B.C. an grew it to it’s greatest height. Divided empire into 20 provinces and began it’s extensive bureaucracy.
Satrap
Governor of the Satrapies or provinces and ruled at the pleasure of the king.
Royal Road
1500 mile road built by Darius that reached from Lydia to Susa, two of the four capital cities of the empire.
Immortals
Core of the standing army of Persians, which were the elite fighters who when 1 was killed was immediately replaced by someone trained to take his place.
Monarchy
Country ruled over by a king or queen.
Zoroaster
The “father” of Persian religion Zoroastrianism, which
became the state religion. It was a monotheistic religion.
Ahuramazda
The supreme god of Zoroastrianism who created all things.
Ahriman
The evil spirit who opposed Ahuramazda.
Xerxes
Son of Darius I who would eventually spell the doom of the Persian empire because of his hatred of the Greeks.
Persepolis
One of the 4 capital cities of the Persian Empire, which Darius had build on the western frontier of the empire.
