What is the procedure when a relief train assists another disabled train?

The relief train or loco must have:

- necessary safeworking authority to enter the section (a train authority or written instructions-unless driver already in section)

- the location, weight and length of the disabled train

- directions from the train controller as to which end of the section the disabled train is to be taken

What is the procedure when a V/Line train assists a suburban electric train?

The procedure to assist a disabled suburban electric train is the same as for assisting a disabled V/line train with the following exceptions.

In addition to drivers conferring and teaching an understanding on:

- the movement intended

- control of the air brake

- where trains are to stop for uncoupling

- air brake test

They must also agree on where trains are required to stop to detrain passengers.

It is the suburban drivers responsibility to arrange the coupling of the air brake hoses between the loco and the suburban train to ensure that full braking capacity is available.

Radio communication is not available between suburban trains and loco hauled trains.

Drivers must be alert for whistle codes and hand signals.

What are the speeds for various classes of vehicles assisting disabled trains?

See Network Service Plan for accurate information.

Loco hauled speed max 100km/h

Loco propelled speed with front loco brakes operational max speed 40km/h

Loco propelled speed with no front loco brakes max speed 16km/h

What is the procedure when a suburban electric train assists a disabled V/Line train?

In the metro area, the driver of the disabled train must dictate the DRA to the Metrol Train Controller who is responsible for arranging a relief train.

This could also be transmitted via Centrol to Metrol.

It is the suburban electric train drivers responsibility to ensure that the combined trains do not exceed the tonnage and vehicle limitations.

Before the disabled train is moved:

- two drivers must confer working of train and where trains are to stop for uncoupling

- relief driver to stop short until signalled to couple up

- tail signal removed

- brake pipe hoses coupled and air brake controlled from leading vehicle where possible

- continuity test conducted

- both drivers to exchange hand signals or radio messages

- leading train to sound 2 x distinct whistles and assisting train to repeat whistle code
