Informal Assessments

Informal assessment techniques include observation, checklists, homework checks, and class and group participation.

Formal Assessments

Formal assessment techniques include quizzes, tests, projects, and norm-referenced testing. These are often also known as traditional assessments.

Alternative Assessments

Alternative or authentic assessments include anecdotal records of student behavior, portfolios, checklists of student progress, performance-based assessments, and student-teacher conferences. Alternative assessments provide a view of a student's process and product, which is closely related to the instructional activity. Traditional assessments usually provide a view only of the product of the learning, such as the score on a test, and may not be as closely related to classroom instruction.

Criteria and Rubrics

English teachers provide clear criteria for assignments to ensure that students understand the requirements of the task. A rubric is aligned with the criteria for the assignment to clearly delineate how the assignment will be scored.
