most common method (ht/wt): BMI
Elbow Breadth
BMI parameters
undernutrition: <18.5
Appropriate: 18.5-24.9
overweight: 25-29.9
obese: 30-39.9
extreme obesity: 40 & higher
Elbow Breadth
used to assess children. ht/wt measurements plots on chart over time
Tanner Stage 1 - preadolescent (female)
*only the nipple is raised
*no growth of pubic hair
Tanner Stage 2 (female)
*Bud-shaped rising of the areola.
*Areola has increased in diameter and is slightly elevated
*Scarcely pigmented straight hair. Seen primarily along the medial border of the labia.
Tanner Stage 3 (female)
*Breast/areola enlarged. No contour separation
*Sparse, dar, visibly pigmented curly pubic hair on labia
Tanner Stage 4 (female)
*Increasing fact deposits. Areola forms secondary elevation above that of the breast. This occurs in about half of all girls & in some cases persists in adulthood.
*Hair coarse and curly, abundant but less than that on the adult
Tanner Stage 5 (female)
*(adult stage) the areola (usually) part of the general breast contour and is strongly pigmented. Nipple projects.
*Lateral spreading; type and triangle spread of adult hair to medial surface of thighs
Tanner Stage 6 (female)
*further extension laterally, upward, or dispersed (occurs in only 10% of women)
Tanner Stage 1 (males)
testes, scrotum and penis same size/shape as a young child
(preadolescent) no growth of pubic hair
Tanner stage 2 (male)
enlargement of scrotum/testes. Scrotal skin becomes redder, thinner, and wrinkled. Penis typically does not enlarge, if it does, it is barely any bigger.
slightly pigmented, lover, strait hair. downy. usually at the base of the penis. sometimes on scrotum
Tanner stage 3 (males)
enlargement of the penis, especially in length. the testes enlarge also. scrotum descends.
dark, definitely pigmented, curly pubic hair at the base of the penis
Tanner stage 4 (males)
continued enlargement of the penis and sculpturing of the glans. increased pigmentation of the scrotum. 'not quite adult'
pubic hair definitely adult in type, but not in extent. (does not reach past the inguinal fold.)
Tanner stage 5 (males)
adult stage. scrotum is ample. penis reaches nearly the bottom of the scrotum
adult distribution. hair spreads to the medial surface of the thighs, but not upward.
Tanner stage 6 (male)
hair spreads along line alba (occurs in 80% of men)
Ideal weight for pregnant women
determine the pre-pregnancy BMI. make sure to monitor weight gain through the entire pregnancy
bmi: <19.8 = 18.2kg gain
19.8-26.0 = 11.5-16kg
26.1-29 = 7-11.5kg
>29 = 7kg
Ideal weight for pregnant adolescent
less than 16yrs old or less than 2yrs after starting menarche, may still be in the middle of their growth spurt, additional weight to be gained for optimal baby weight.
ideal baby weight
5lb 8oz-8lb 13oz.
they lose 10% of birth weight, then regain this weight within 2 weeks. then gain 1oz/day x 3mo, double birth weight by 4-5mo and triple by 12months
What are the macronutrients and what is their function
Carb, protein and fat
provide the calories needed to energy in the human body and are required in large amounts.
